Summer break from school can mean lost skills by autumn. There are a considerable number of fun summer activities which can help the child to continue practicing reading skills that they have learned and be ready for the start of the new school year. Here are some great ideas to keep your child's reading skills from slipping this summer. Be sure to find ways that will help the child practice fluency as well as comprehension skills.
Follow up:
Set up a special summer reading box. Plan periodic trips to the library and allow your child to fill their reading box with a variety of reading genre.
It may be helpful to have the kids "check out" one book at a time from the Reading Box at home so you spend less time hunting library books lost in your house when you are ready to return them.
Give your child a flashlight or special reading/book light and encourage a little fun, bedtime reading. This is a great way to help the child learn to love reading.
Plan a weekly family read aloud. Allow time for each family member to read out loud. You should be prepared with a few questions at the end of each family reading time. This will encourage a lively book discussion. Thinking through and talking about what you read increases the child's comprehension, encourages higher level thinking skills to develop, and will bring your family closer together!
When you travel on vacation, get a recorded book to listen to as you drive down the road.
Recorded books are also a great way to spend a rainy day. If you can get a hard copy of the book, a younger child can follow along as the story is read.
