Healthy Sense of Sight - Crucial to Learning Success
"The visual system is a significant part of how we process information and a key factor in how we learn. 80% of what you perceive, comprehend and remember depends on the efficiency of the visual system." (Vision and Learning)
Follow up:
Nearly 90 % of classroom learning requires the child to utilize their visual system. Sight is essentially how well a child is seeing. However, even a child with 20/20 sight vision can have problems related to their visual system. The visual system encompasses not only the physical structures of the muscular system of the eyes, eye structure, nervous system and brain, but how well all of these components work together.
The visual system starts developing while the child is still in the womb and continues to develop long after birth. As approximately 25% of children have a vision problem interfering in their ability to learn efficiently and achieve success in school, it is prudent to have your child assessed often by a behavioral optometrist. It is recommended that children have their visual system examined at ages 6 months, 3 years old, before Kindergarten and then every 1-2 years after that. Any time a child is struggling in school or has been diagnosed with a learning disorder, an examine by a behavioral optometrist is a prudent way to start.
